Sajal Aly To Star In Classic Umrao Jaan Series
The planned movie, which will be in Urdu and be directed by Hamid Hussain and Muhammad Yaqoob, is built on the 1899 novel by Mirza Hadi Ruswa.
The 1899 novel Umrao Jaan Ada by Mirza Hadi Ruswa has been adapted numerous times, and it appears that this trend won’t be stopping anytime soon. The most recent adaptation is a TV show with Sajal Aly.
Action Consultancy, a South Asian talent management company with offices in Abu Dhabi, is packaging and producing the upcoming Urdu-language series. Hamid Hussain and Muhammad Yaqoob are the producers.
The series adaptation, according to Hussain, heavily leans on the authentic Urdu version of the literature, unlike the movie versions that had made creative liberties to shoehorn the story into a cinematic narrative, he said in an exclusive interview with Variety on Friday. The work contains a lot of material that has never before been presented in a film or television program.
The currently in-development show is rumoured to include an additional strong female main character from the book. It is anticipated to go to a significant streamer. The book has already been adapted several times. Both in 2003 as Umrao Jaan Ada on Geo TV and in 2014 as Doordarshan on Indian TV, we saw it. Salim-Sulaiman even transformed it into the musical Umrao Jaan Ada: The Musical in 2019.
The iconic Urdu novel is renowned for its depiction of the subcontinental culture and society of the 19th century. It has also been adapted for a number of movies. Umrao Jaan Ada, directed by Hasan Tariq in Pakistan in 1972, starred Rani as the main character. Rekha played the major role in Muzaffar Ali’s Umrao Jaan in India, while Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played the same role in JP Dutta’s 2006 remake. Two 1958 movies, Mehndi by Yusuf and Zindagi Ya Toofan by Nakhshab Jarchavi, were also influenced by the book.
Leading actors like Humayun Saeed, who recently played Dr Hasnat Khan in The Crown, and Ahad Raza Mir, who played Arjun in Netflix’s Resident Evil, are managed by the Abu Dhabi-based company Action Consultancy. The firm has diversified its offerings by foraying into foreign shows and movies.
