Abdul Rehman Had Nearly Dropped Out Of School
Nearly a million children in Pakistan might not be returning to their classrooms due to increased financial difficulties. This almost included Abdul Rehman.
Ms. Nasima, the TCF school principal in Adilpur, Jacobabad, had a sinking feeling as she listed down the names of students who hadn’t returned to their classrooms post the Covid 19 closures. Among the names on the list was Abdul Rehman (a 9 year old boy who never missed a day of school).
“I tried his parents’ number several times but there was no response. So I decided to visit them,” shares Ms. Nasima. “There I learnt that Abdul Rehman had started selling masks on the streets ever since his father lost his job during the pandemic.” Eldest among three siblings, Abdul Rehman had become the sole breadwinner for his family and they could not afford to lose his earnings.
“I had very little hope but I didn’t give up,” recalls Ms. Nasima who kept trying to persuade his parents through regular visits and calls, to allow Rehman to return to school. It took her nearly a month before they agreed to let him attend school for 3 days a week. On the rest of the days, Abdul Rehman continued his job of selling masks.
Today, Abdul Rehman is back in school- reading, learning and dreaming ! “At school, I enjoy playing cricket with my friends and reading stories in class. When I grow up I want to serve my country,” shared bright eyed Abdul Rehman who was full of joy on his first day back.
