Air Pollution in Karachi at an All-Time High

Experts have announced that air pollution in Karachi is at an alarming rank, and is expected to worsen within the coming years.

While the air in winters is supposedly worse than the whole year round, in Karachi, the atmosphere is always pretty bad. According to the authorities, air pollution in Karachi may worsen if immediate action is not taken against it.

Due to the air pollution in Karachi, it has landed the city as one of the most populated cities in the world. “While the city currently has no government mechanism in place to monitor its air quality, the data being generated privately is very much reliable; and can be generalized over the entire city and used for reference purposes,” said Engineer Danish Khan working as a technical adviser to the vice-chancellor of the NED University of Engineering and Technology.

According to him, three air quality monitoring devices are currently active in the city; one is installed near the Karachi Press Club, the other at the US consulate, and the third one in the Malir Cantonment area. All indicating that the air pollution in Karachi is on the rise.

“We have found that city’s air quality remains ‘unhealthy’ most part of the current year, excluding the period of lockdown imposed due to Covid-19. By ‘unhealthy’ we mean that the city generally has an Air Quality Index (AQI) value of 101-150. It remains on the higher side of this range and shows a further increase during peak hours,” he explained while saying that a team at NED University has been studying the air pollution levels in Karachi for over a year.

Mr. Khan emphasized that the need for air quality monitors to manage air pollution in Karachi is incredibly necessary. According to the global scales, an AQI of 0-50 is good air quality. An AQI ranging between 51 and 100 may pose somewhat of a health concern to a small group of people sensitive to air pollution, while an AQI ranging from 101 to 150 is typically classified as unhealthy to sensitive groups. Moreover, an AQI from 150-200 is known as harmful for everyone and anything higher than 200 is deemed as hazardous.

Since the air pollution in Karachi is ranging from 101-150 on the Air Quality Index, it is ranked as unhealthy for certain groups. Experts say that given the rise of pollution within the economy, this may even worsen over time becoming hazardous and unhealthy for everyone.
