Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh has been shot dead by Israeli forces in the West Bank.

According to Al Jazeera, Shireen Abu Akleh was shot in the head while covering the Israeli army’s raid on the Jenin Refugee Camp.

She was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Furthermore, another reporter from Al Jazeera, Nida Ibrahim, had this to say; “What we know for now is that the Palestinian Health Ministry has announced her death. Shireen Abu Akleh, was covering the events unfolding in Jenin, specifically an Israeli raid the city, which is north of the occupied West Bank, when she was hit by a bullet to the head.”

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s party Fatah condemned the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh. The party spokesman Osama al-Qawasami had this to say;

“Targeting Shireen is a clear targeting of the truth, and [Israel] wants to cover its crimes against the Palestinian people. Israel wants to send a message to journalists around the world that the fate of whoever wants to cover the truth will be shot and killed.”

The Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot, had also mourned the loss of Shireen Abu Akleh. He had this to say on Twitter.

Shireen Abu Akleh was not the only Al Jazeera journalist that was shot. Ali Samoudi, another journalist for the company, was also shot. Luckily though, he managed to survive.

The sad demise of Shireen Abu Akleh is not surprising. Countless journalists and media outlets have faced crackdown and attacks by the Israeli forces. They have been attacked for their coverage of the Israeli atrocities in the Palestinian territories.

One example is when the Israeli forces bombed a building hosting the offices of both Al Jazeera and the Associated Press.

On behalf of Runway Pakistan, we offer our condolences to the family and friends of Shireen Abu Akleh, as well as the entire team of Al Jazeera.
