Aurat March 2022 In Lahore Is Still In Trouble

Aurat March organizers in Lahore are supposed to present their plea in LHC on 7th March after several attempts to shut down the event by the authorities.

Aurat March organizers have said, “We will demand from the court a right that is already ours – the right to reclaim the streets and march onwards.”

Women in Pakistan have been enthusiastically organizing and participating in Aurat March on the 8th of March since 2018. However, this fact has not been settling well in a patriarchal society, especially with religiously extremist people.

In 2020, Aurat March Organizers faced a situation and had to get a court order in Lahore to conduct the March. This year again a situation similar to this have occurred with much more intensity.

The Lahore organizers this year have submitted a petition in the high court to secure the event but the petition was ignored. However, Lahore’s Additional Deputy Commissioner directed the officials to conduct a meeting with Aurat March organizers to persuade them to call off the march and step down due to security threats and possible conflicts. The Additional Deputy Commissioner also added that if they do decide to go on with the event, the organizers themselves will be responsible for the safety of the crowd.

The organizers condemned this behaviour by the authorities and have blamed the state for refusing to let women practice their fundamental human rights and providing them security. Justice Shahid Waheed will hear Aurat March’s plea before the LHC on the morning of March 7th. Articles 16,17, and 19 of the Constitution provide freedom of assembly and basic rights, according to the event’s organisers.

This year’s slogan for International Women Day and Aurat March is #BreakTheBias to ensure that action is taken against the bias faced by women in Pakistani society. Minister of Religious Affairs has asked the state to tag 8th March as Hijab day, while globally Hijab Day is celebrated on the first day of February.
