Banks to Provide Disinfected Currency: SBP

Amid the rise of the COVID-19, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has directed all of the banks to disinfect any cash or currency they may receive from hospitals. This is so the virus cannot spread through money circulation and infect people.
The decision was taken by the Governor of SBP Reza Baqir, on a video link meeting with this team. In a Press Release, it was announced that arrangements are being made to provide fresh or re-issuable cash to banks. The latter will include any cash and currency that has remained in quarantine for minimum 15 days and has been disinfected through the SBP.
Furthermore, the banks have been assured that SBP will be able supply enough disinfected and clean currency to meet the demands. The SBP has also directed for continuous functioning of the ATMs, and have asked banks to keep 24/7 helplines and call centers open. Their statement also advised against large closure of branches, although they can open their branches around 10 am to facilitate more people.
“Large scale closure of branches may cause rush and congestion in the operative branches, which may be counterproductive to efforts to contain the spread of the disease.”
This is a much needed move by the SBP, because while we practice social distancing, we also need to ensure that any shared commodities (such as currency) are disinfected for people’s use.
