The Barbie Franchise has launched its first doll with Type 1 diabetes to expand on inclusivity and awareness about the disease. The Barbie features a continuous glucose monitor, insulin pump, and other features to represent those diagnosed with the chronic disease. In collaboration with Breakthrough T1D, formerly JDRF, a diabetes research organization, to empower and recognize a condition experienced by many individuals.
Barbie’s Fashionistas line launched Barbie with Type 1 Diabetes who wears blue polka-dot top and skirt set with a circle print representing the symbol for diabetes awareness. Barbie also carries a pastel blue purse where she can stash any snacks or Type 1 diabetes supplies she might need.
Krista Berger, senior vice president of Barbie stated, “Introducing a Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes marks an important step in our commitment to inclusivity and representation” she explained the importance of incorporating visuals of concepts around us via figurines such as Barbie helps to build narrative in mindsets of children.
She quoted, “Barbie helps shape children’s early perceptions of the world, and by reflecting medical conditions like T1D, we ensure more kids can see themselves in the stories they imagine and the dolls they love”
Usually, Type 1 diabetes often starts during childhood or someone’s teenage years. , Barbie Fashionistas line and Breakthrough T1D collaborated to connect with children, spreading Type 1 Diabetes awareness.
The company endorsed two big names to help promote its new Type 1 diabetes doll. They honored model Lila Moss and Peloton instructor Robin Arzón with the new doll who suffers from Type 1 Diabetes.
