The 2020 Billboard Music Awards nominees were announced on the morning of September 22. Fans of many artists were not at all pleased after the nominations list circulated social media.
To begin with, the board nominated artists like Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish for the Top New Artist category both of whom haven’t released much music this year and would be better suited for last year’s ceremony. Moreover, Khalid has been nominated for Top Hot 100 Artist despite not releasing much music this year either—another nominated that faced a lot of fan backlash.
Although fanbases of many artists have shown resentment, the loudest of them all is Doja Cat’s fanbase. The artist hit her first number one on the Hot 100 this year with her single Say So after she released a new version with the fellow female rapper also known as the ‘Queen of Rap’, Nicki Minaj. Doja Cat was snubbed from being nominated for the aforementioned categories and also the Top Rap Female Artist despite climbing to the top of the charts and having the longest-running solo female rap single with Say So—37 weeks.
Her fanbase is outraged and strongly believe that she deserved recognition at this year’s ceremony. Yet again, Billboard has been called out for their nominations list; last year fans were outraged when Nicki Minaj wasn’t nominated despite becoming the first female artist in the history of music to reach 100 entries on the Billboard Hot 100, surpassing musical icon, Aretha Franklin’s record as the female with the highest number of entries.
Upset fans took to Twitter to voice their resentment.

Other fanbases that were extremely upset with the nominations list included fans of Megan Thee Stallion, Roddy Ricch, Selena Gomez, BTS and Dababy all of whom had record-breaking achievements this year.
