Toxic Ingredients Exposed
The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has launched a nationwide crackdown on companies manufacturing and marketing skin whitening creams with high mercury content. The action follows an extensive probe that revealed several popular beauty brands were selling products containing dangerously high mercury levels while claiming they were safe and skin-friendly.
Health Hazards of Mercury Use
Mercury is a toxic heavy metal that can cause kidney damage, nerve disorders, skin diseases, and long-term neurological problems. The World Health Organization (WHO) has strongly warned against its use in cosmetics. Most countries have banned mercury-based products, yet Pakistan’s beauty market remains flooded with such creams. Many of these are promoted through deceptive advertisements and celebrity endorsements that mislead consumers.
Strict Penalties Under the Competition Act 2010
The CCP declared that such practices violate the Competition Act 2010. Companies found guilty of deceptive marketing can face fines of up to Rs75 million or 10% of their annual turnover. The Commission ordered violators to remove false claims and reformulate their products to meet safety standards.
Public Awareness and Consumer Protection
The CCP urged consumers to stay alert and verify the authenticity of cosmetics before buying. It also encouraged the public to report misleading advertisements and unsafe products through its online complaint portal. This crackdown represents a major step toward consumer safety, fair competition, and the elimination of harmful beauty products from Pakistan’s market.
