In the early hours of Sunday, September 6, terror struck on the family of 5-year-old girl Marwah as another child abuse case sparked clamour. Two days after she was reported missing, local authorities found her torched dead body amidst a heap of garbage near her house in the Old Sabzi Mandi area, from where she had gone missing on Friday.
Upon recovery, her body was immediately transported to Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Centre for a postmortem examination. The autopsy report verified the horrific crime – Marwah had been brutally raped. It was further revealed that the cause of death was head injuries.
Upon public outrage, SHO, Shakir Husain apprised the public that one person had been taken into custody as a suspect for further interrogation.
Given its brutal nature, this crime resulted in a mass protest at the Main University Road right after the burial. The nation grieved yet another horrific tragedy of one of its young girls being ferociously abused to death.
The case further gained recognition as there was a nation-wide uproar with public figures such as Waqar Zaka, Shan Masood and Alamgir Khan took to their twitter to voice their grievances and demanding justice for the innocent Marwah. This resulted in the hashtag #JusticeForMarwah escalating to the top of the trending charts. Despite the mass resentment that the nation portrayed, political figures such as the Human Rights Minister, Shireen Mazari have yet to speak on this case of harrowing child abuse.
Dating back to 2018, another innocent 7-year-old girl, Zainab Ansari faced the same heinous crime where she was strangled to death after being sexually assaulted. Following the horrendous crime, the Senate approved the Zainab Alert, Response and Recovery Bill, 2019, for the protection of minors. As of, October 2018, her assailant faced a death penalty.
Moreover, child abuse is a prevalent issue in Pakistan which often goes by unnoticed. Unfortunately, its so deep-rooted in our culture that the ghastly truth is that Pakistan ranks as one of the highest globally when it comes to child abuse and sexual assault. It has been reported that an average of 8 children are sexually abused daily.
The mass protests explain the nation’s worry regarding the protection of the Pakistani youth. With increasing similar cases, the responsibilities and the actions taken by the relevant authorities are in question.
