Coronavirus & Iran’s Combat Against Sanctions
Burdened under sanctions over sanctions, how hard it might be for a country to tackle both, the pandemic and economy together.
Iran and US always had political setbacks and none of the two countries are ready to settle. However, if we compare them on a scale, US is much more developed than Iran. Nevertheless, Iran has always tried coming back to the top through some means or other. Bringing down US’s undetectable Drone proved that Iran has militarized equipments to deal with a war. However, the recent coronavirus pandemic shows that Iran has been lacking in medical advancements. But if seen fairly, Iran has already been burdened with a lot of sanctions coming from US, which if weren’t there, they could have been in a better position to fight the pandemic.
In last 24 hours, there have been 123 more deaths, raising the death toll to 2,640 amongst 38,309 confirmed cases. Regardless of the efforts he is putting in, President Hasan Rouhani is being criticized by people around the world. It is really important for Rouhani to secure the country politically and fight the pandemic. As he said “Health is a principle for us, but the production and security of society is also a principle for us. “We must put these principles together to reach a final decision. This is not the time to gather followers,” he added. “This is not a time for political war.”
The UN has also told to re-evaluate sanctions on countries. “At this crucial time, both for global public health reasons, and to support the rights and lives of millions of people in these countries, sectoral sanctions should be eased or suspended,” UNHCR chief Michelle Bachelet said.
Iran is looking for relief of sanctions and a loan of $15bn from IMF. Rouhani told at last, “We must prepare to live with this virus until a treatment or vaccine is discovered, which hasn’t yet happened to date.”
