The Punjab government’s plan to deploy free Wi-Fi at railway stations may appear forward-looking, but it truly exemplifies the case of priorities gone wrong. While the automation of railway stations can facilitate access to travelers’ information, entertainment, and work, Pakistan’s education system is still in the Stone Age.
The condition of the schools in the rural areas of Punjab is deplorable. Infrastructural amenities such as electricity, clean drinking water, qualified teaching staff, and boundary walls are virtually absent. Therefore, having Wi-Fi at a railway station in such environments is of rather limited use as the next generation is devoid of quality education.
Passengers’ access convenience should not consume as much money as is being suggested. Instead, with the same funds and technology, why not the public schools? Providing internet in the classrooms could open educational opportunities, teacher training, and at least somewhat equalize the educational disparity of urban and rural students. This would not only help in infrastructure, but the future of Pakistan.
Sounds modern to have free Wi-Fi at train stations, but providing access to free Wi-Fi in schools would have a much greater impact.
Modernization should improve lives where it’s most needed.
