Ed Sheeran Talks About His Wife’s Cancer Diagnosis
Singer Ed Sheeran admitted that he penned seven songs in four hours to help him cope with the grief he experienced after learning the news.
In his new Disney+ video series titled Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All, British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran spoke up and became emotional when discussing his experience discovering the cancer diagnosis of his wife Cherry Seaborn. Today, May 3, is the docuseries’ scheduled premiere date.
In February 2022, his wife, who was expecting their second child, received a cancer diagnosis. According to People magazine, Seaborn, who is often reticent, revealed why she chose to take part in the documentary during a vulnerable scene in the first episode, Love.
“I got diagnosed with cancer at the start of the year which was a massive s**tter,” she stated. “It made me massively reflect on our mortality. I would never agree to do anything like this but it made me think, ‘Oh if I died, what’s people’s perception of me? What do you leave behind?”
“For Ed, the whole point is he wants to say to people, ‘I’m not just this music machine. I’m not just this robot that tries to get No. 1. I’m a father, I’m a son, I’m a friend.’ It wasn’t until this year when I was like, ‘I might die’,” she continued.
“When something really intense happens to him, he writes a song,” Seaborn said. Ed Sheeran revealed that he penned a total of seven songs in a span of four hours to cope with the sorrow he faced upon hearing the news. He said with tears in his eyes, “It was horrible.”
Ed Sheeran emphasised how much his wife matters to him by saying, “It’s the most amazing thing in my life that nobody really knows about…everything in my life got so much better when she got into it.”
On Friday, the Grammy recipient will release his new album, called – (pronounced subtract). On March 1, he declared that he had included his “deepest, darkest thoughts” in the record. “I had been working on Subtract for a decade, trying to sculpt the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I thought it should be.”
Ed Sheeran continued, “Then at the start of 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and ultimately the way I viewed music and art,”
He claimed the new record “opened the trapdoor” to his “soul” “Within the space of a month, my pregnant wife got told she had a tumour, with no route to treatment until after the birth.”
“I was spiralling through fear, depression and anxiety. I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up but not being able to break through for air,” Ed Sheeran remarked.
Jupiter, their second daughter, was born to Seaborn last May. Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran, their first child, was born in August 2020.
The two young lovers first connected at school when they were 11 years old and dated for a while before revealing their engagement on social media in 2018 and getting hitched soon after.
