Met Gala 2025 features the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” to honor black dandyism. The theme is inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity”. Black dandyism aims to exhibit the importance of black identities in the Atlantic diaspora. The movement stands as the formation of Back identities from the 18th century to the present day through garments, fashion, and style.
What is Black Dandyism?
Black Dandyism as a theme highlights the significance of fashion in revolutionizing the socio-political position of African Americans in society. Especially in America and European society, where, back in the 1700s, enslaved African Americans were dressed in expensive clothing. The act portrayed the wealth of the master building trend for “dandified black servant” or “Luxury servant”.

The movement gained popularity, and African Americans recognized the importance of the power dynamics of clothing. Reading the room, black dandyism became a popular practice to signal clothing as a form of resistance. Black dandyism used fashion and aesthetics to shape identity with bold hues and printed apparel.

Power Dynamics of Fashion
Fashion transformed the landscape for black men and women to shine in society. The power of fashion shaped their identities, with men showcasing bold hues, striped zoot suits with shoulder pads, and baggy pants. Moreover, men experimented with tailored fabrics, pristine fedora hats, two-toned oxfords, and billowing silhouettes.
On the other hand, black women shaped black dandyism as well. Black dandyism played a vital role in shaping the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance blues singer Gladys Bentley empowered Dandyism with her trademark white satin suit and top hat. Grace Jones, who frequently wears masculine garments, such as the Armani suit jacket, empowered black fashion.

Monica L. Miller, author and professor of Africana studies, explains, “Black people and their relationship to fashion is that it seems required for Black people in power”. In other words, Miller explains the importance fashion carries for Black people to be taken seriously, while white men can have the privilege of scruffiness.
What does Black Dandyism signify Today?
Met Gala challenges stereotypes and chooses black dandyism as a celebration of sartorial declaration. The theme empowers black fashion as elegance and luxury as an expression of resistance and power.

Dandyism serves as a break in the hierarchy of social and cultural norms, empowering black fashion to define resistance. Miller adds, “It asks questions about identity, representation, and mobility in relation to race, class, gender, sexuality, and power”.
