Facebook released its transparency report earlier this week. It showed that over 31% of the requests originated from Pakistan between January and July 2019. Facebook restricted 5,690 items within Pakistan during the first half of 2019, as compared to 4,174 pieces from the second half of 2018. There have many requests and most of them have been from Pakistan which is somewhat alarming.
“Upon a routine review of our actions, we determined that we restricted access to 17 items in error during this period, including 11 items that should have been deleted for violating the Community Standards and six items on which we should have taken no action. We have corrected these mistakes,”
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has been sending official requests to Facebook for taking down certain posts that are violating local laws such as posts that have blasphemous content, defamation and many more along these lines. However, there are certain posts that Facebook has restricted only in Pakistan due to local laws.
The government had also requested account reviews and data requests from Facebook during this period. Such requests are generally accompanied by legal processes, but during emergencies, it is possible to get information if Facebook voluntarily discloses it to law enforcement. Pakistan sent 175 emergency disclosure requests in the reporting period.
Along with this report, Facebook has also released a content moderation report. It states that they have removed almost 3.2 billion fake accounts during this year, between April and September. A lot of posts have also been removed which depicted illegal content, suicide and child pornography. They have shared information regarding taking down many posts that were against their community standards on Instagram as well.
All these posts and fake accounts were a source of spreading fake news and other illegal activities. Facebook has taken strong action against it and proven to take necessary steps in making the world’s largest social networking site a bit safer.
