First Female District Officer in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Pakistan's province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has recently appointed their first female District Police Officer (DPO), Sonia Shamroz.

For the first time in history, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa gets its first female District Police Officer (DPO). According to the media, the 18-grade officer of the Police Service of Pakistan, SP Sonia Shamroz has been posted as the DPO for lower Chitral.

The first female district officer in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sonia, returned to Pakistan just recently from the UK after receiving her Chevening Fellowship. She has been honored to serve as the first female principal of the Mansehra Police Training Center.

Sonia belongs to the Abottabad district, and before becoming the first female district officer in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, she was posted as an Assistant Superintendent Police after passing her CSS exams. She has also served as Additional SP Abbottabad in the past. During her fellowship in the UK, Sonia completed a world-class course on violence against women and conflict in the UK.

Moreover, Sonia says that she is proud to serve as the first female officer in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “As a female officer, handling the district is no less than a challenge,” SP Sonia said. She further expressed gratitude to have the opportunity to serve the people of the Chitral district.“I joined the police to encourage and motivate other females to come forward and to be trailblazer,” she said. “My husband and father have helped me a lot. Initially, most people discouraged me, because of the nature of the police job.”

She says that she aims to encourage other women to join the field. Being the first female district officer in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa she believes it is her responsibility to set an example. “Serving as a DPO in Chitral is a challenging task. My priority will be to encourage other females to come forward and take the lead.”

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police chief while praising the appointment of the first female district officer said that the provincial police is a force of martyrs. “We are giving outstanding opportunities to women based on merit,” he said. “We have many more women police officers in the elite force and traffic department.”
