Who is Shah Mahmood Qureshi?
Belonging from the family that is the caretaker of the Shrine of Bahauddin Zakariya, though Shah Mahmood Qureshi rejected the claims of him using religion to get votes in 2014, “I have never used religion for political gain. I have never dragged devotees of sufi saints in political matters, and those who vote for me do it of their free will.”
From 1988 to 1990, Qureshi served as the Minister of Planning and Development in the cabinet of Punjab, which was being led by Nawaz Sharif. After 1990, he became the Minister of Finance in the cabinet of Punjab under Manzoor Wattoo’s until 1993.
It was in 1993 that Shah Mahmood Qureshi shifted from PML-N to PPP. When he won the elections, he became the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs under PM Benazir Bhutto’s ministry. By 1996, he had become the spokesperson of PPP.
During Musharraf’s rule, Qureshi rejected a position in the Council of Economic Advisers, and became the Mayor of Multan from 2000 to 2002. He also won the elections in 2002 and became a member of the National Assembly again.
By 2006, Benazir Bhutto appointed Qureshi as the President of Pakistan Peoples Party Punjab. He was once again re-elected in National Assembly in 2008, and got the position of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. However, after the Raymond Davies case and cabinet reshuffle, Shah Mahmood Qureshi lost the portfolio of Foreign Affairs.
It was after this that Qureshi resigned from PPP and joined PTI. In December 2011, he became the Vice Chairman of PTI, and was once again re-elected to the National Assembly in 2013.
Furthermore, when PTI won the elections in 2018, and Qureshi got re-elected, he once again became the Foreign Minister of Pakistan, which he is to this day.
