Government Fires 4,500 PSM Employees

The government fires over 4,500 PSM employees, after an emergency meeting chaired by the Pakistan Steel Mill chief executive officer at the CEO Secretariat on Friday.

Management said that the officials belonging to the 2, 3, and 4 pay group categories have been fired from their jobs and that even included some divisional and assistant managers.

The spokesperson also mentioned that the dismissal letters have been sent to the fired employees by post.

“The department head was summoned today for the termination of the staffers,” said the convener of the group, Mumraiz Khan, adding that because of such decisions they were forced to go on the streets and protest even during this pandemic situation. He also lamented over the delay in payment of salaries to incumbent PSM employees and those who have been fired. “These salaries are our due right and not a favor from the state,” he said.

Along with this argument, Saeed Ghani, minister for labor in Sindh, also opposed the federal government’s decision to terminate the services of PSM employees, and said that his party will stand along with the employees. He also requested the government to take back its decision and announce a proper economic package to make the PSM functional.

Earlier this month, Hammad Azhar, Industries & Production Minister said that the government has decided to privatize PSM as it had become a burden on the national exchequer.

He also said that PSM employees had not been working for the last many years and now they would get a financial package of around Rs2.3 million per employee as compensation. He further added, “The previous governments could not handle this issue, therefore, the present government had to take the final decision about the fate of the mill in the larger interest of the country.”
