Green Line Buses to Operate in Karachi by August

Federal Minister Asad Umar on Sunday said that the Green Line buses project will inaugurate operations in Karachi by August 2021.

Asad Umar, Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives on Sunday, February 14 said that the Green Line buses project will inaugurate operations in Karachi by August 2021.

The minister broke the news during his address at a gathering held at the Governor House to hand over 52 fire tenders to Karachi Metropolitan Municipality (KMC).

Asad Umar said that the Green Line buses services will begin operations “in between July and August”, and a prototype bus for the purpose will soon be ready. In his address, he criticised the provincial government for “not empowering the civic bodies as it should”.

He added that the federation is working beyond its responsibility to give Karachi its due rights.

The federal minister also reiterated that Premier Imran Khan has maintained that promises made to Karachi must be fulfilled as soon as possible.

Orangi and Gujjar Nala areas will see work completed soon and a consultant is working to arrange a freight corridor from Karachi Port. Moreover, work is underway to implement the Karachi Transformation Plan.

Governor Sindh Imran Ismail and Federal Minister Ali Zaidi were also among those who sharply criticised the Sindh government for not empowering civic bodies.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Ismail pointed out the role of mayors across the globe is of ‘the father of the city’ whereas in Pakistan, they are “pitied, neither having any power nor money”.

Furthermore, Ismail added said that the Solid Waste Management Board has “failed miserably” to collect garbage in Karachi.

Ali Zaidi said that the lack of fire tenders in an overly populous and industrial city like Karachi is a matter of pivotal concern. “Every city has the basic facilities of fire tenders,” he said.
