In recent months, Pakistan has shown an alarming increase rate in HIV/AIDS patients. It has reached a point where many patients are showing signs of drug resistance. Being a country where the literacy rate is extremely low has also affected Pakistan. Sex education is considered a taboo, and that’s one reason why there is a lack of awareness among Pakistanis regarding preventive measures.

It’s a potentially life-threatening disease that weakens the immune system of a person leading to a number of infections that could be fatal. Majority of the people are not aware of the seriousness of this disease hence, the lack of prevention which is adding up to the number of patients.

Pakistan earlier had a low prevalence of HIV and the recent outbreak in Larkana is alarming. The cause is not yet known even though a special committee was sent by the UN to figure out the cause behind it along with ample medication to keep it under control.

According to statistics provided by the Sindh AIDS Control Program, 26,041 people were screened for HIV and 751 have been tested positive for the disease. It was assumed that the disease was being spread due to the mismanagement and lack of proper sterilization by the hospital. However, it is not entirely true.

Dr. Saeed Khan,  a professor of pathology associated with the Dow International Medical College, said in a conference:

“In our culture, topics related to sexual encounters and safe sex are considered as a taboo so they are not openly discussed, increasing vulnerability of population especially of the youth to the infection.”

There should be more awareness sessions at places where it is needed, such as underdeveloped and rural areas of Pakistan, as they have limited access to information.
