How to Prevent Yourself from Coronavirus

The situation is alarming, but you can definitely take some simple precautionary measures to prevent yourself from Coronavirus

Havoc and panic spread out when the news of this virus broke out. Coronavirus has apparently spread to Karachi. A patient suffering from this virus has been reported by the authorities. He is alive and being taken care of at AKUH because no other hospital has the medical facilities required to look after such patients. Yes, this situation is alarming, but we can take care of it by thinking straight.

The first thing to take into account is that the patient suffering from Coronavirus has been kept in quarantine along with his family members. He’s being monitored over there and the situation is contained. However, we should take all the necessary precautions needed to keep us safe and sound. We need to understand how the virus spreads and what we can do to keep ourselves safe.

The virus spreads when droplets of bodily fluids, generated through coughing & sneezing, enter a healthy person’s body through eyes, nose and mouth. That’s the only way of this virus or any virus to be spread. Hence, we can take precautionary measures to keep ourselves safe.

  1. The easiest thing we can do is to maintain a distance. A distance of 0.5 to 2 meters from anyone who is visibly sick, is considered as safe. It will allow you to deceive and avoid large droplets from coming in contact with you.
  2. You can wear a mask. Either you can keep yourself safe by wearing a mask or you can provide the ill person with one. If you wear one, then you can prevent yourself to some extent but that definitely isn’t a guarantee. If an ill person wears a mask, then they can stop the illness from spreading elsewhere.
  3. Avoid crowded places. It’s generally a good idea to avoid crowded places at this point because we never really know who is suffering or sick. You may not be able to protect yourself if you go out without any precautions. Coronavirus has a tendency to travel through coughing and other bodily fluids.
  4. Keep washing your hands. A sick person can transfer their saliva or droplets to other public places when they come in contact such as door handles, stair banisters etc. It’s a good idea to always keep a sanitizer. Avoid touching your mouth, nose or eyes without washing your hands.
  5. Throw away your masks after using them once. Do not keep using one mask for more than a day. Bacteria can grow on the inside of your mask too so the best practice is to discard the mask after a day.

You don’t necessarily need to wear a mask if you’re not sick. It’s better to wear them at public places because it’ll prevent you but it’s okay if you don’t wear one. A sick person should definitely wear them so that they don’t infect others.

If you follow these simple steps then you can definitely prevent yourself but it’s not a guarantee. However, you can reduce the chances of being infected. It’s high time that we take this seriously. Yes, everyone’s panicking but we need to think straight and tackle this situation accordingly.
