Angeline Malik, a name in the Pakistani media industry that we all know of and have heard of. A truly inspiring woman who has worked in multiple roles, be it in front of the camera or behind it. She has produced, directed and written many famous dramas alongside acting and can truly be called an all-rounder in this field. We had the honor to interview Angeline Malik for our esteemed magazine and bring to you thoughts from a strong and independent woman like her who has been successful in her field.
Q1. You’ve been in this field of media for so long, how did you develop your interest?
Ans. I was always a storyteller as well as an artist and believed in expressing myself through different mediums and means. I never got into it because of the glitz and glamour. What inspired me was having a greater audience to all I had to say.
Q2. You’re an actor, director, producer and a writer; an all-rounder, I’d say. Which one do you enjoy the most and why?
Ans. It’s very hard to compare. Since I have a lot to say hence any role which gives me the power to communicate is the role I would like to play. As a director it is my vision, it’s all about how I see things. I control all the dramatic and artistic aspects. Everything and everyone on set is my tools to use as they may. As an actor, it can be frustrating because you are part of somebody else’s vision and even when you give your best, when put together your best might not come across as all that you have put in. Nevertheless, I find acting a much harder job. As a writer, I am still learning
Q3. Which drama or film has been the closest to your heart till now?
Ans. I’d choose Rani, which was aired on PTV back in 2008. I was the actor, producer and director. The story was based on a female leader in politics. I guess it was before its time. The tagline was “she dared to rule in a man’s world”
Q4. What projects are you currently working on? Would you like to share some details with us?
Ans. I am creating different platforms right now and gearing up to act in a film very soon.
Q5. What sort of dramas or films would you like to see in Pakistan considering the current situation of media?
Ans. We are presently in a state where we have to be very careful about what we have to say. The viewers have become smarter but at the same time impressionable; we have to be extremely careful and responsible. We need to make statements without hurting sensibilities and without giving the wrong message. Freedom of speech with respect to different sensibilities is what I would like to see on screen.
Q6. As an artist, which quality do you think every artist should possess?
Ans. They should have sensitivity. An artist needs to be aware of everything around them may it be politically, socially or ethically. They can translate it into their work once they feel all that. That’s why they call an artist ‘eccentric’.
Q7. Who is that one person that you look up to and admire the most?
Ans. I admire my dad Prof Aslam Khan Malik. He gave his life to humanity before us all and I used to hate that but now I can understand and I wish I can be even close to what he was.
Q8. Where do you think our media industry stands and what needs to be improved?
Ans. I think we stand nowhere because we have no unity. Everyone is working in their own space. We need to work together as a community. Unless we don’t grow together from the lowest level i.e. a technician, a spot boy to the highest level, we can never grow at all. That is something we need to work on.
Q9. How do you manage your work, social and personal life?
Ans. They are all somewhat interconnected. I would say my work is something I love and what I love is part of who I am so that becomes personal.
Q10. What’s your everyday routine like? Tell us what you do when you’re not working.
Ans. I think of what to do next.
Q11. You’ve been interviewed so many times – What’s the one question you wished someone would have asked you but never did?
Ans. I can’t say. But there are some answers which don’t have a question, which I don’t know myself. That’s what I want to be asked.
Q12. What is the one thing that you love about your career the most?
Ans. The fact that you have to love this career otherwise you wouldn’t be in it.
Q13. What advice would you give to your readers who want to join the media industry?
Ans. Believe in yourself. That’s all it takes to be who you want to be.
