India Extends Lockdown till May 3 Due to COVID-19

On Tuesday, India reported over 10,000 cases of coronavirus despite a complete lockdown. Hence, Prime Minister extended the lockdown to May 3.

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has extended the nationwide lockdown to May 3. In order to curb the spread of COVID-19, the PM has ordered a three-week lockdown earlier. Despite the lockdown, the number of coronavirus cases jumped to 10,541. Hence, the PM has extended the lockdown and allowed some states to resume important activities.

While addressing the audience through a televised address, Narendra Modi said:

“My request to all my countrymen is that coronavirus will not be allowed to spread across new areas at any cost. We have to be very careful about hotspots. We will have to keep a close watch on the places that are expected to become hotspots.”

The 21-day lockdown, which was supposed to end on April 14, was imposed on March 24. The whole country with a population of 1.3 billion was under a complete lockdown to restrain the virus from spreading.

Modi said:

“Until May 3, all of us will have to remain in lockdown. During this time, we have to follow the same discipline as we have been doing,”

All activities have been suspended during the lockdown, which includes regular shops, commercial establishments and other public places have been closed. Before the Prime Minister’s address, many states had already announced the lockdown will be extended till April 30. India also fears that the country may not be able to cope up with a major outbreak. Hence, the lockdown has been extended.

The country has reported 10,363 coronavirus cases, including at least 339 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health on Tuesday.
