Instagram and Facebook Are iOS’s Most Invasive Apps

Apple's newly introduced privacy levels enabled data to be collected that sheds light on how Instagram and Facebook are IOS's most invasive Apps.

A report on iOS reveals the extensive amount of information collected by the iOS apps. Around 52% of the app gathers personal data that include, location, browsing history, bank details, contact information, and fitness level, according to a report published by the pCloud. Apple’s newly introduced privacy levels enabled this data to be collected and shed light on how Instagram and Facebook are IOS’s most invasive Apps.

The report was published by pCloud, according to which Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn are the apps that use and share most data with third parties. Instagram tops the list by sharing 79% of the personal data whereas Facebook follows the lead with 57% and finally LinkedIn and UberEats share 50% of our data.

Not only these apps but Youtube also contributes to our invasion of privacy by sending 42% of our personal data to third parties that use it to customize their advertisements accordingly based on the information that they are provided with. Surprisingly, they are not the only ones, about 80% of apps use users’ personal data to market their products. This includes eBay, which sells 40% of our data, however, Amazon was reported to be ranked low in collecting data and does not share data with third parties.

Finally, Reddit an online platform that claims to be a safe platform for freedom of speech shares users’ location and data with third parties and tracks user content and purchases for its own marketing strategies. The report also revealed apps that protect the user privacy and are safe to use, these include Skype, Microsoft, and Google classroom.

The newly introduced Apple’s privacy labels are a good initiative and help users keep track of apps that collect their personal information. Mobile advertising expert Eric Seufert has estimated the privacy cost of Apple’s change. He estimates some people will opt into tracking: likely around 20%. “I believe that Apple’s upcoming iOS privacy changes will significantly harm Facebook’s revenue, causing a roughly 7% revenue impairment in Q2 2021 in the base case scenario. Subsequent quarters will also face revenue losses.
