Iran-Pakistan Border: The New Gateway to Trade
The two neighboring countries, Iran and Pakistan, in an attempt to improve trade, have decided to open a new Iran-Pakistan crossing border
On Saturday, 19th December, Iran, and Pakistan opened a new Iran-Pakistan border opening point, in an attempt to boost and improve business and trade between the two nations.
The Iran-Pakistan border, also known as the Rimdan-Gabd border, the gateway was officially thrown open in the presence of officials from the two countries, becoming the second border crossing between the two states. Located in Iran’s southeastern Sistan-Balochistan province, about 130km from the strategic Chabahar port, the Rimdan crossing point is suitably located for the import and export of goods between Iran and Pakistan.
The Iran-Pakistan border decision came into effect upon Iranian Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif’s, visit to Islamabad in November, when two nations decided and agreed upon opening the border to facilitate increased trade.
Moreover, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Saeed Khatibzadeh, said the new Iran-Pakistan border crossing point will “increase economic and trade exchanges” between the two countries. He further mentions that the construction of the gateway and the recent construction of a railroad project between Iran and Afghanistan show that Iran gives a “special priority to interaction and cooperation with neighbors”
Sayed Mohammad Ali Hosseini states the opening of the Iran-Pakistan border crossing as a historic day for the two countries. Iran and Pakistan share a 959 km border, and in recent years have held interactions at various levels to increase border crossings for facilitating trade and movement of residents and travelers.
Until now, Mirjavah-Taftan was the only Iran-Pakistan border crossing point made for trade and public commute between the two states. Mirjavah is a city in Sistan-Balochistan province in Iran. The creation of this new border gateway is expected to lessen the burden on the Mirjavah-Taftan crossing point.
