Ireland has become the first country in the EU to bring forward legislation that bans trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Ireland’s Cabinet formally approved drafting legislation, the Israeli Settlements (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2025, in May to prohibit imports of goods produced in Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
The foreign minister of Ireland, Simon Harris, stated, “This is an important measure, because we are speaking up and speaking out on behalf of the people of Ireland in relation to this genocidal activity.”

The bill has been approved as an ethical and legal response to the “horrifying situation” in Gaza and Israel’s continued settlement expansion in the occupied territories. Israel has been massacring thousands of Palestinians against international law for decades now, illegally occupying territories. Condemning genocide, Ireland has taken a major step to ban Israeli products in the country.
Haris Simon believes that if the European block moves together, it would really make an effective impact. He quoted, “It would be a hell of a lot better if Europe moved together on it, and a hell of a lot more impactful”. However, as for Ireland, he stated, “Ireland is speaking up and speaking out against the genocidal activity in Gaza”.
In desperate times of inflation and a dropping economy, Ireland took a stance to show the world that cruelty and injustice should not stand a chance. Many countries can take inspiration from Ireland to support Palestine in the cause by impacting trade with Israel.
