Brenton Tarrant, the Australian white supremacist was sentenced to life imprisonment after he was convicted of New Zealand’s worst massacre. He was sentenced in August for killing 51 Muslim worshippers and injuring dozens of others at two mosques in the southern city. Jacinda Ardern and her government will be releasing a major report to the public on Tuesday in the parliament. The inquiry into the attack was formed to determine whether the massacre was a result of the government’s failings and if it could have been prevented.
“I absolutely appreciate the community will want to see accountability in terms of implementation. They will want to see who is responsible for coordinating some of those efforts…and we will be providing that,” Jacinda Ardern informed the media.
The report is 792-pages long and consists of several interviews including those of security agencies, Muslim community leaders, international experts and officials from the United Kingdom, Norway and Australia, along with Jacinda Ardern herself. The report took 18 months to compile due to its depth.
Although Ardern received global praise for the way she dealt with the tragedy by swiftly banning the sale of the high capacity semi-automatic weapons used in the attack and launching a global movement against online extremism, critics pointed out that security agencies failed to take notice of hate crime against Muslims in the country and ignored escalating threats from white supremacists.
Ardern met with the family members of the victims on Sunday consoling them repeatedly while vowing to immediate action on the royal commission report however made it clear that some recommendations may take time to be implemented.
