The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists had called a meeting for all journalists, upon the call the journalist community held press freedom rallies all across Pakistan. They argue that the space for freedom of press, speech, and expression has considerably shrunken criticizing the fascist and dictatorial PTI government.
Speakers present at the press freedom rallies in Pakistan, organized by thirteen unions of journalists, highly criticized the PTI government led by the prime minister, Imran Khan, for its anti-media policies. The journalists claim that they will fight against such policies with the power of their pens.
Similarly, at the Islamabad Press Club, a rather huge press freedom rally was arranged by the Rawalpindi Union. It was attended by several journalists, union representatives, politicians, civil society members, etc. They called all participants to unite for defending the freedom of the press in Pakistan.
Former chairman Senate, Raza Rabbani, while addressing the press freedom rallies, stressed upon the need for freedom of press and launching of this movement without any further delays because of the government and its methods of silencing the media.
“Now the time for compromises has gone; we will have to fight for people’s rights, democracy, and freedom of press jointly,” he said.
Moreover, PFUJ President Shehzada Zulfiqar, while addressing the press freedom rally in Quetta said, “The rights guaranteed in the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan cannot be denied and will be defended at any cost as we are committed to ensuring freedom of press and media in the country,” he said.
Similarly, PFUJ’s secretary General Nasir Zaidi urged the media community to be ready for a fight and not to give up on these press freedom rallies in Pakistan. “We have no stakes to safeguard but to fight against forces of fascism who, in the name of so-called democracy, are adopting anti-media policies just to suppress the media in the country,” he added.
Senior journalist and anchor Hamid Mir warned the government that such anti-media campaigns will not break the journalist community, and the imposition of censorship will not be able to curb their wrath. “We will not accept journalist protection bill, rejected by the journalist’s community during the previous PML-N government, which was reportedly being adopted by Imran Khan-led government,” he warned.
