Karachi Police to Register FIRs for Littering in City
In a bid to try and keep the busy city clean; Local Administrator, Iftikhar Shallwani, has announced that Karachi Police will register FIRs for littering.
In order to keep the bustling city of Karachi clean, Karachi Administrator, Iftikhar Shallwani, has announced the imposition of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to restrict the residents from littering the city. In simpler words, Karachi Police has decided to register FIRs for littering.
The ban is said to be in action for the next two months, and anyone found in violation of this rule by throwing garbage on the roads or any public location will apply to an FIR for littering in the city. Iftikhar Shallwani has further warned the people that the police have complete authority to arrest people violating this rule under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
Moreover, he stated that the bundles of garbage dumped at several spots all over the city are not only unpleasant to see but are also causing extreme damage to the sewerage system of Karachi. “The city’s environment is deteriorating due to the dumping of garbage in unrelated places,” Iftikhar Shallwani said. “It is also causing traffic jams and spreading an unpleasant odor.” This is why they have decided to register FIRs for littering.
To curb the spread of garbage throughout Karachi, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) proposed to purchase up to 200 Qingqi rickshaws to go door-to-door and collect garbage- The Local Government and Information Minister, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, said that the government is ready to purchase more rickshaws if required, and along with FIRs for littering, they will also create a separate Solid Waste Management Board for Karachi.
The government has been trying its level best to curb the amounts of trash accumulated in Karachi. Registering FIRs for littering is not all they’re doing; two months ago, the Sindh government renewed their contract with a Chinese firm to collect trash over Karachi’s District West after the promise that they fulfill their responsibilities efficiently.
