Karachi To Be The First Pakistani City To Run On Electric Buses

Pakistan's People's Party government in Sindh recently launched the first-ever electric bus project in Karachi which is the first to be launched in the country.

The works for the federal city to have the first environmentally-friendly electric transport were claimed to be in the works by the Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudry. However, Pakistan’s People’s Party(PPP) government in Sindh took the lead and recently launched the first electric bus project in Karachi, which will be the first-ever electric-run buses in the country.

The project was inaugurated by the Sindh Minister for Transport Ovais Qadir Shah under a public-private partnership. The initial destinations that the bus will cover include Tower, which will be the starting point of the route till Sohrab Goth, the final destination of the route. The fare for these buses has been decided to be kept as low as Rs 10, which means that it is targeted to cater to all the existing classes in the society. The project is to have 10 bus stops initially.

The provincial transport minister also contributed to this by adding that the electric buses would be run on a trial basis from the designated areas, Tower via MA Jinnah Road and Shahra-e-Pakistan to Sohrab Goth. The fare will be Rs 4 per kilometer, with the number of buses increasing on a monthly basis. The prime aim is to produce around 100 of these environmentally-friendly vehicles by the end of the year.

Moreover, the PPP government was applauded for its efforts in introducing these buses that will enable Karachi to run on electric buses, a step towards sustainable development.

The news has been circulating rapidly on social media, where the sci-tech minister also joined in the applaud and congratulated the Sindh government on their accomplishment, sending special regards to Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and his ministry on the “remarkable step to add electric bus in Karachi Commuters system”. He further extended his support to the Sindh government’s “futuristic approaches” and expressed the need for these developments to take place in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa while addressing their governments.

We hope that this step towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly mode of travel is sustained and also extended to other parts of the country.
