Lightyear Movie Restricted In UAE Due To Same-Sex Relationship
The movie depicts characters in a same-sex relationship, the UAE prohibited Disney-animated Pixar's feature film Lightyear from being screened in theatres.
According to the Ministry of Youth and Culture’s media regulatory authority, Lightyear would not be permitted for exhibition in the country since it breached the country’s media content guideline.
Rashid Khalfan Al Nuaimi, Executive Director of the Media Regulatory Office, subsequently told Reuters that the film, Lightyear, was prohibited because it included “gay” characters in multiple sequences.
A Disney spokesperson didn’t initially reply to Reuters’ emailed inquiries about the restriction, which prompted acclaim from some in the nation on social media.
Same-sex partnerships are illegal in the UAE, as they are in many other Middle Eastern and Muslim countries. The UAE is a Gulf country with a population of around 10 million people, the majority of whom are foreigners.
Lightyear is based on the Buzz Lightyear animatronic hero from the renowned Toy Story franchise and is set to be released on June 16 in UAE theatres.
Buzz. in Lightyear, is voiced by Chris Evans, and Alisha Hawthorne is played by Uzo Aduba. Aduba’s character is romantically involved with another lady, whom she kisses in the movie.
Some people on social media said that showing same-sex couples were not allowed in UAE’s religion and culture, while others claimed that such material should not be shown to youngsters.
An Arab hashtag demanding that the film not be screened in the UAE was gaining steam on social media before of Monday’s decision.
Regulators in Muslim-majority countries have already prohibited films that depict same-sex couples, while others that contain profanity or illicit drug use have been restricted.
Global versions of films will be aired in the UAE, according to the UAE’s entertainment regulatory office, which confirmed this in December.
