Despite, the exponential rise in COVID-19 cases amid the second wave, PML-N Vice President, Maryam Nawaz has decided to go ahead with the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) rally in Multan scheduled for November 30. This a serious threat to the lives of her followers who she has encouraged to attend a public rally.
It is not the first time the PDM has been criticised for ignoring the threats that come with the pandemic’s second wave. Previously PM Imran Khan and his cabinet members criticised PDM for moving ahead with the rally in Peshawar despite the threats.
Moreover, the rally will take place only two days after her grandmother, Begum Shamim Akhtar’s burial who has recently passed away in London. This puts a question on her morality because instead of grieving the loss, she is going to be attending a rally which is a potential threat to the health and lives of the attendees. However, Maryam justified the decision by telling reporters at Jati Umra on Thursday: “Nawaz Sharif has directed me to attend the meeting of the PDM.”
In a tweet, Special Assistant to the Premier, Shahbaz Gill stated: “The body of the grandmother of Maryam is kept in a cargo plane and Nawaz Sharif is issuing political directions to his daughter. Let her be buried first.”
Moreover, Maryam Nawaz claimed that during her days in prison, she suffered from thyroid issues and was forced to have medicines infected with fungus. To this Shahbaz Gill responded: “They are strange people. Earlier, Maryam said no government person informed her about the death of her grandmother. Now she is saying that she was given rats’ leftover food in jail.”
Maryam Nawaz’s intentions also seem to be quite mysterious as she refused to meet Jamaat-i-Islami leader Dr Samia Raheel Qazi who came to Jati Umra to condole with her the death of her grandmother. This is suspicious because Jamaat-i-Islami is part of the PDM so it seems rather strange as to why the self-acclaimed ‘democratic’ leader would reject meeting her ally.
Funeral prayers of Begum Shamim Akhtar will be offered on Saturday at Sharif Medical City. For this, the Punjab government has approved releasing Shebaz Sharif and his son Hamza on five-day parole to participate in the funeral of his mother. Both will be released upon arrival of the body of Begum Akhtar.
