The PML-N Vice President, Maryam Nawaz on Friday stated that her father, also the ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan’s viewpoint regarding a “state above the state” has been proven to be true after the Karachi incident. She was referring to the arrest of her husband, Mohammad Safdar after the PDM rally in Karachi and Gujranwala. This stirred a conflict between Sindh’s law enforcement agency and the police.
The incident involved Sindh IGP, Mushtaq Mahar deciding to defer his own leave and ordered his officers to set aside their leave applications for ten days in larger national interests.
“I demand DG ISI Faiz Hameed and Chief of Army Staff Gen Bajwa investigate your institution [and] how it is operating in this province. All officers of Sindh police are wondering who were the people who surrounded the Sindh police chief’s house in the early hours of Monday. Who were those two men who entered into his home at 4 am in the morning and took him to an unspecified location?” said PPP Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in his address to the military.
Maryam Nawaz said in her statement, “What happened in Karachi has shown who is actually running the government.”
“Imran Khan is not the government. He is simply a dummy occupying a seat and that dummy has been silent for three days.”
She continued to add, “The Karachi incident has made it clear that Nawaz Sharif’s stance — about ‘state above the state’ and Imran Khan being nothing more than a pawn — is correct. Nawaz Sharif only said it, you [Imran] proved it […] showed the nation what a state above the state is.”
Moreover, she believes that there is no need for an inquiry because the provincial government is aware of what emerged from the Karachi incident and because “There is plenty of video footage”.
“If there is an inquiry, it should be transparent so that the nation knows everything and the report should be made public.”
Furthermore, in light of Safdar’s arrest, former PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said institutions such as the Inter-Services Intelligence and Pakistan Rangers took were instructed by Imran Khan to violate Safdar’s privacy and arrest him. “This is the reality that the country’s premier gave the order to violate privacy.”
