Meera’s recent request for financial assistance from the Artist Support Fund, launched by the Punjab Information and Cultural department, has been denied by the Government. The Baaji star had requested for Rs 40 million, as her finances were in deep trouble. However, the fund stated that they could only offer Rs 5,000 to 10,000 to the veteran actress.

After Meera had applied for the financial assistance and written to the senior officials, a meeting was held at the Alhamra Arts Council under MPA Sadia Sohail Rana. Unanimously, the decision was presented that the actress cannot be offered more than Rs 10,000. It was pointed out that to qualify for these funds, the artist had to have less than Rs 15,000 as their monthly income, as well as be above the age of 50.
MPA Sadia Sohail Rana mentioned that the fund is only for the “poor artists who have been affected badly from the ongoing situation”.
She added, “I am surprised why Meera applied for the help as in this situation she herself should be supporting other poor artists. Meera should understand that everything is not a joke. Artists of her stature should set aside funds for difficult times when they earn large amounts.”
The Naagin star has defended her need for the assistance, saying that she has not other choice. “My shows in USA and Canada were cancelled due to Covid-19. I suffered a loss of around $100,000. I have to pay back the loan I took in Dubai. I was earning Rs 15,000 per appearance but with no shows, I am forced to apply for financial support.”
Meera claimed that she did not know that her financial assistance has been rejected by the Punjab Government. She plans to take the matter to the Federal Government.
