Miss Universe And The Problem With Beauty Pageants
While social media might be buzzing with the crowning of a new Miss Universe, we want to highlight the overall problem with beauty pageants.
We have all heard the news of Harnaaz Sandhu from India becoming the new Miss Universe. The news has been circulating across social media platforms. Many from the entertainment and media industry were congratulating the lady for her achievement.
However, we would like to take this opportunity to highlight the main issue with beauty pageants. While in no way seek to bash Ms. Sandhu, we still want to highlight the overall problem with such contests.
For starters, they are highly sexist and archaic. The sheer idea of women all glammed up and walking the stage in a voluptuous manner is anything but empowering.
It only seeks to reduce women to mere sex objects and does not seek to highlight their talent or intelligence.
Organizers of Miss Universe and other such events claim that beauty pageants are not sexist. In fact, they claim that it allows women to express themselves and use such platforms to raise awareness about important issues.
However, such arguments simply don’t cut it. If that is the case, then there is no need to have women walk the ramp in skimpy swimsuits.
Even if we take this motive on face value, other questions start to arise. One such question is that why is it only pretty looking women raising these issues on such a massive stage ? Why are women who do not fit the standard of global beauty not represented at such events ?
This brings me to the other issue with beauty pageants, the unhealthy beauty standards it promotes. It creates this notion that if you do not look like a beauty queen, then your simply not attractive.
Many young girls internalize these sorts of troubling messages which contribute to them having mental health issues. These issues include body dysmorphic disorder or anorexia. Young women also start having self worth issues and feel as if they are not good enough.
To sum it up, while we believe people should have the free choice to do what they want. We also believe that we have the free right to critique such events.
In our views, beauty pageants promote nothing but problematic and outdated views of beauty and what truly defines a women.
