Naegleria: Another life lost to the Brain-Eating Infection in Karachi
Naegleria is a parasite that is found in fresh water in the form of lakes and rivers, which can be fatal for humans if it enters the body.
Often found in rivers, springs and fresh water lakes Naegleria is a brain eating amoeba which enters through the nose and travels up to the brain. The disease is called Naegleriasis or Naegleria infection.
A person can die within 7 days of coming in contact with this amoeba. In Karachi the death count of 2021 went up to five on 13th of July.
Fifth victim of this infection was Rana Sharjeel, who was a 19 year old college student and lived in Dalmia. According to the sources connected to the victim, Rana spent a day at farmhouse in Malir on June 27th after which he started experiencing body aches, fever and vomiting. He was rushed to PNS Shifa Hospital few days later when he fell unconscious and passed away.
Doctors have concluded that the reason for his death was the fresh water in swimming pool, which was not cleaned with Chlorine to disinfect the water from Naegleria and several other fatal amoebae.
The victim of the fourth death caused by Naegleria was Dr. Majid, a neurologist. He started developing common symptom, indicating the Naegleria infection. His health started deteriorating in less than 24 hours and he was taken to PNS Shifa Hospital where he was immediately admitted in ICU on June 30th. He was put on ventilator on July 1st.
Dr Majid and his family used to get their water from tankers and after testing the water, chlorine traces were not found which could have been the reason. After this incident, DHA and CBC have been instructed to chlorinate their under ground water tankers.
On Friday an 8 year old kid, Zohaib, was also effected by this brain eating disease. He also developed fever and headache like Dr. Majid. His condition got worse under 24 hours and he passed away after being admitted to Liaquat National Hospital.
Previously two more residents of Karachi were diagnosed with this infection. A 30-year old, who lived at Abdul Hassan Isphani Road passed away in June. And a 40-year old, resident of Quaidabad society passed away in mid-May.
