New Coronavirus Variant Cases Reported in Pakistan

As per a report by the Sindh health department, 12 samples of Unitied Kingdom returnees were taken for genotyping out of which six tested positive for COVID-19 and three showed the new coronavirus variant of in the first phase.

Meeran Yousuf, spokesperson for the Sindh health department revealed, “The genotyping showed 95 per cent match of the new variant from the UK. These samples will go through another phase of genotyping. Meanwhile, the contact tracing of these patients is in process and their contacts are being isolated also.

After indications from the European Union and other countries, Pakistan, on December 21, banned the entry of passengers from the UK into Pakistan in fears over the deadly new coronavirus variant in Britain.

While this new coronavirus variant has caused havoc across the globe, the World Health Organisation has reassured that it was “in close contact with UK officials on the new #COVID19 virus variant” and promised to keep governments and the public in the loop of any new findings made.

The entry of the new coronavirus variant in Pakistan is extremely alarming as it is said to be 56% more contagious than the original virus and will consequently spread faster leading to further fatalities and hospitalisations.

“The increase in transmissibility is likely to lead to a large increase in incidence, with Covid-19 hospitalisations and deaths projected to reach higher levels in 2021 than were observed in 2020, even if regional tiered restrictions implemented before 19 December are maintained,” said researchers.

The Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) said that it is vigilant about the emergence of the new coronavirus variant of SARS CoV-2 in Pakistan. However, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on health, Dr Faisal Sultan admitted that the situation in the health sector of Pakistan is hinting danger. He added that the situation was the “worst” when compared to other South Asian countries.
