Nike has sued a New York-based company over trademark infringement on their release of “Satan Shoes” which has sparked social media backlash. The lawsuit was filed on Monday, in which Nike accused MSCHF Product Studio, Inc. of trademark infringement over their 666 pairs of modified Nike sneakers made in collaboration with Lil Nas X, the Old Town Road singer.

The MSCHF studio is claimed to have customized Nike Air Max 97 sneakers which contain red ink and “one drop of human blood” in the sole. The trainers also feature an inverted cross, a pentagram, and the words “Luke 10:18″ on them, which is a verse from the Bible- ” So He told them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”
It has been reported that MSCHF released 666 pairs of shoes on Monday which sold out in less than a minute.
According to sources, ” Nike asked the court to order MSCHF to permanently stop fulfilling orders for the unauthorized Lil Nas X Satan Shoes. The lawsuit notes that social media users have threatened to boycott Nike over controversial shoes”. Moreover, “MSCHF and its unauthorized Satan Shoes are likely to cause confusion and dilution and create an erroneous association between MSCHF’s products and Nike,” the sportswear company says in its complaint. “In the short time since the announcement of the Satan Shoes, Nike has suffered significant harm to its goodwill, including among consumers who believe that Nike is endorsing satanism”.

The controversy stems from the music video of Lil Nas X’s latest single “Montero(Call Me By Your Name)”. The video depicts the rapper as a fallen angel and a demon. Thereby, when these trainers with a cross, pentagram, a drop of human blood, and a biblical verse were released in collaboration with the rapper, it made the launch come under fire, and the global conglomerate Nike was at the receiving end of the backlash.
