According to the Interior Ministry, the Torkham, Chaman and Ghulam Khan terminals will be opened along the Pak-Afghan border for 24 hours, 6 days a week from June 22 onwards.

The notification stated, “I am directed to refer to this ministry’s letter of even no dated May 1, 2020 on the subject cited above and to convey that competent authority has approved management of Afghan transit/bilateral trade and pedestrian movement along Pak-Afghan border with effect from June 22.”
Furthermore, “unlimited number of trucks will be allowed per day for both Afghan transit and bilateral trade” whilst following all COVID-19 SOPs that are set. However, even though the border will be open 6 days a week, trading operations will only be taking place 5 days a week – Saturday is for pedestrian traffic.
“Standard Quarantine Protocols and SOPs (as applicable to air passengers) will be applicable for pedestrians as well.”

It is being reported that a total of 500 trucks will be crossing the Torkham border terminal on June 22 – an even 250 from each side of the border. The Pakistani trucks will be given to Afghan drivers at zero point of Torkham. Similarly, the Afghan vehicles will be driven by the Pakistani drivers at crossing point.
Pakistani exports to Afghanistan were Rs 128 billion in the FY 2019-2020 and Rs 122 billion in FY 2018-2019. Let’s hope that opening the Pak-Afghan border for trade helps improve our financial position for FY 2020-2021.
