Pakistan: An Independent Nation?
Where does Pakistan stands after 73 years of independence? What did we gain and what did we lose in these 73 years? Here are some stats about that.
Gaining independence from India wasn’t an easy task for Pakistan. Millions of people lost their lives and many more were injured. As Muslims didn’t possess much power back then, they had to face more atrocities than the Hindus. However, there was a clear ratio of Muslims and Hindus coming to Pakistan, but then rivalry between the two major religious groups created havoc. Muslims were killed, their bodies were burned, women were raped and kids were separated from their parents. The trauma of the 1947 events still haunts many of those who’re are alive today.
After 73 years of independence and so much lost already, Pakistan has still achieved nothing as such. Pakistan’s GDP was one of the greatest when it gained independence, however, soon things being to change. Other than that, education isn’t much of a thing in this country. Only 2% of the budget is spent on education, which is nothing compared to most of the countries. When Pakistan became a nation, it had a literacy rate of 17.9% only. However, with time it reached 65% in 2020. Yet, if we compare it to India only, it had a literacy rate of 12% in 1947, which now has reached to 74.5% in 2020. Pakistan has fought around 15 major and minor wars, they have been a part of GWOT, and they have been a victim of Talibanization. Pakistan is still lacking in the technological sector, in cyber pro-activity and science.
The people of this country are still stuck in religious, sectarian, and ethnic differences. People still want to fight over dowry, when they should have been fighting for women and transgender rights. People still haven’t moved passed the hatred for one another. It is not only tough, but is also really hard for such a country to move forward.
And not only this, but there is corruption in this country on yet another level. Political corruption is on its hype, the security agencies are charged for corruption, and so are people of the country. Political instability prevails, and the country is currently running majorly on loans taken from other countries in the name of aid.
Why haven’t we grown out to be a better country? Why do we lack basic knowledge of the most basic things? What would it take for this country to be better than what it is today? It is easy. All it would take is education, honest politicians, and loyal people. That is all this country needs at the moment.People lost their lives to achieve what we have today. People lost their homes, their jobs, their businesses. Partition isn’t easy, and so wasn’t the birth of this motherland we live in. The current generation has already seen this country being broken into pieces. We have witnessed the worst of the times, and now, the current generations want a change. A change, so we can see a better Pakistan. Not a ‘Naya Pakistan’, but a better one. A country where there is freedom of speech, where one can roam freely on streets and have no fear. That is the Pakistan we want, once again. I hope we actually are an independent nation, soon. An independent, democratic nation, which is not living under an indirect dictatorship rule.
Happy Independence Day, fellas!
