Pakistan and Bangladesh Strengthening Ties
After what was always known as a rather rocky history, Pakistan and Bangladesh have decided to put aside their differences and strengthen ties.
Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Ahmed Siddiqui called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed in Dhaka; in what was said, according to the diplomatic sources, an attempt to fix bilateral relations between the two states.
This meeting between Pakistan and Bangladesh came as quite a surprise, because of the fragile history that the two states share. However, Pakistan and Bangladesh have witnessed considerable improvement in ties this year.
“The two sides (Pakistan and Bangladesh) agreed to further strengthen the existing fraternal relations between the two countries,” the High Commission said in a statement.
Pakistan and Bangladesh always had multiple bilateral mechanisms, however, they had been suspended for several years. It is now assumed that a dialogue between the foreign secretaries of both states shall be exchanged, which has not been done for the past 12 years.
Moreover, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Ms. Wajed stressed the fact that bilateral ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh must be strengthened. In the meeting, she wished the people of Pakistan well, and also pledged full support to the high commissioner in the discharge of his official duties.
Similarly, Prime Minister, Imran Khan had also expressed his desire to improve relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh. On his phone call, he said he would like to “deepen fraternal relations based on mutual trust, mutual respect, and sovereign equality”.
High Commissioner made sure to mention Mr. Khan’s message to Ms. Wajed, which she reciprocated with her greetings and well wishes to the leadership of Pakistan. “The High Commissioner informed Prime Minister H.E. Sheikh Hasina that the government and the people of Pakistan held the Bangladesh leadership and people in high esteem and affection. The prime minister expressed good wishes for the people of Pakistan,” he added.
The two states have always had a rocky history given the 1971 war and separation, our bilateral ties have been somewhat walking on eggshells. It is a great relief to see that Pakistan and Bangladesh are coming together, and planning on strengthening ties further.
