In a landmark decision, the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports in Pakistan has announced that newly issued passports will now feature the names of both the mother and father of the passport holder. This development brings Pakistan’s passport system in line with global documentation standards and is expected to simplify identity verification for citizens, particularly during international travel.
Mustafa Jamal Qazi, Director General of Immigration and Passports, emphasized that the updated format is designed to minimize identity-related challenges, particularly those faced by Pakistani citizens abroad. The inclusion of the mother’s name, alongside the father’s, marks a progressive shift towards more inclusive documentation, also aiding in legal and social matters.
The change will only apply to new or renewed passports issued after the implementation date. Citizens who already hold valid passports do not need to rush for renewal, as the new rule does not affect existing documents.
Authorities believe this step will also help align national documentation with international legal frameworks and support family identification in diverse scenarios.
