A group of scientists from the University of Agriculture in Faisalabad are making headlines after they managed to extract the hemp thread from indigenous cannabis. These scientists are making sustainable jeans from the fabric extracted from the cannabis plant. The hemp thread after extraction is processed and mixed with cotton to produce a fabric that is sustainable for the environment
The hemp fabric textile extracted is manufactured with the help of fibres present in the stalks of the cannabis plant.

Herein, given the scientists’ work on hemp fabric, a Memorandum of understanding has also been signed for export purposes. The chairperson of the Department of Fibre and Textile Technology at the University of Agriculture in Faislabad, Dr Asad Farooq affirmed, “We have signed an MoU with a US-based company and will soon begin mass production”.
The chairperson, Dr Asad Farooq highlighted that there is a massive growth in demand in the west, particularly in the USA and Europe, to replace cotton with sustainable fabric such as the one extracted from cannabis (hemp fabric). He also added that the Pakistani textile industry received major offers and demands in this regard and are continuously being contacted by US apparel to begin the mass production of sustainable goods. Dr Asad Farooq also affirmed that the University began working on the project after receiving approval from the government.
Scientists from the university while explaining the manufacturing process said that the hemp fabric from the cannabis plant is harsh and requires a lot of chemical processing to soften it. Firstly, the fibres are separated from the plant by a process called retting and they are chemically treated and spun into yarn after removing the impurities from it. Once the hemp fabric becomes soft it can blend with cotton easily.

“Hemp is three times more expensive than cotton because of all the processing. As mass production and supply speeds up, the price is likely to decrease”, the scientist added.
