Pakistan’s Water Crisis: A situation that continues to worsen

Provinces in the country are facing a massive water shortage.

Pakistan’s water crisis. A situation that seemingly is getting worse with time. However, little is being done to tackle the problem.

The country’s water sources continue to get depleted and the brunt of the crisis is faced by our nation’s poorest.

According to the latest reports by the Indus River System Authority, there is a 38% water shortage in the country. Some of the worst affected regions in the country are Baluchistan, Sindh and South Punjab.

The lack of water flow in Sindh has drastically affected the province and the livelihoods of farmers. This can be indicated with a record low flow of water between Taunsa and Guddu during the Rabi Season.

The situation has gotten so severe that the Sindh Chamber of Agriculture released a statement urging WAPDA to release 250,000 cusecs of water to help save the crops in the province.

There is a staggering 60% shortage in Sindh with much of the agricultural land becoming barren. Despite this ever growing problem, politicians in Sindh have failed to take any steps to tackle the issue.  Instead, they have rather decided to engage in meaningless blame games with Punjab

The issue gets much worse in Baluchistan. The water shortage in Dera Bugti has resulted in many drinking contaminated water. Which in return has led to the demise of 13 people so far.

The unfortunate aspect of this is that despite the loss of life, not much is being done on a national level. The deaths of these people will continue to be ignored as will the worsening water crisis in the country.

Pakistan’s water crisis is a reflection of not only government negligence but our lack of responsibility as citizens.

Through detailing the gruesome nature of the situation, we hope that it urges people to be more responsible.

They can do so buy closing the tap so water does not get wasted. To not throw water away. To consume only when it is required and above all, to educate others about saving water.

We also urge our readers to pressurize our leaders to do more. To take the issue seriously and pressurize them to urgently tackle the problem.
