Sheikh Rashid gets interior and Hafiz Shaikh gets Finance as PM Imran Khan reshuffles cabinet. This is the fourth cabinet shuffle in less than three years since Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf came into being in 2018.
According to a report, Sheikh Rashid has been replaced with Azam Swati as the railway minister. Retired Brigadier Ijaz Ahmed Shah, who earlier was the interior minister, has now been made minister for narcotics control.
PM Imran Khan reshuffled the cabinet, followed by the recent verdict of the Islamabad High Court barring un-elected advisers and special assistants from heading cabinet committees.
Though Hafeez is not an elected member of Parliament, according to Article 91 (9) of the Constitution, any individual can be a minister for six months, who isn’t a part of the parliament. However, the unelected member should be elected to one of the two Houses of Parliament, in order to become a minister again.
“A minister who for any period of six consecutive months is not a member of the National Assembly shall, at the expiration of that period, cease to be a minister and shall not before the dissolution of that Assembly be again appointed a Minister unless he is elected a member of that Assembly,” reads Article 91 (9).
“Nothing in this clause shall apply to a minister who is a member of the Senate,” the clause adds.
It is believed that Hafeez Sheikh would be made a senator in March when the election for the upper house is scheduled to be held.
