Review of Bilateral Ties: Iranian FM Javad Zarif Arrives

Iranian Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif has arrived in Islamabad on a two-day visit to review bilateral ties and discuss regional issues.

Iranian Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif has arrived in Islamabad on a two-day visit to review bilateral ties and discuss regional issues. He is scheduled to meet the premier Imran Khan, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser and Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa during his visit.

Accompanying Javad Zarif is a delegation of economic and political experts including Iran’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Mohammad Ibrahim Taheriyan. This marks Mr Taheriyan’s first visit to Pakistan during his position as the Iranian point man on Afghanistan.

Mr Taheriyan on Monday in meeting with the special representative of the UN secretary-general for Afghanistan, Deborah Lyons, expressed concerns over the long-standing violence in Afghanistan. Although Iran has supported the intra-Afghan dialogue, it has however failed to make any headway.

Javad Zarif has maintained close relations with Pakistan and has visited the country several times during his tenure, with the previous visit in May 2019. Recently, he also greeted Pakistanis on Iqbal Day in his tweet. The tweet read:

Allama Iqbal Fakhr has the status of a scholar of Islam and an international poet and thinker and the heartache he had for the unity of Muslims is a concern for the world of Islam today. My heart goes out to my beloved Hijazi The saddle is connected in one direction. To all Pakistanis #یوم_اقبال Congratulations. #IqbalDay

In response to Mr Zarif’s tweet, Foreign Office spokesman, Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said Allama Iqbal is another common bond between Iran and Pakistan.

This visit of Javad Zarif is imperative and crucial since Pakistani relations with Iran have been challenging because it faces serious challenges in advancing with Iran especially when it has to balance the relation between Saudi Arabia and Iran and also handle pressures from the USA. Although both countries have attempted to increase the bilateral trade and have highlighted economic engagement as the key factor in their relationship, regional issues and dynamics become a challenge in their bilateral engagement.
