Schools to Reopen in Pakistan on Jan 18
Education ministers in a conference have decided to reopen schools and other educational institutions in Pakistan in phases from January 18.
Whilst addressing a press conference in the capital after a conference with officials, Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood announced that in the first phase, schools will be allowed to reopen for students of grades 9 to 12 from January 18.
He added that in the next phase, schools will be permitted to reopen for students of grades 1 to 8 from January 25. All higher educational institutions would resume from February 1, Shafqat Mehmood stated.
Schedule of schools reopening:
- Jan 18: Classes 9 to 12 to resume
- Jan 25: Classes 1 to 8 to resume
- Feb 1: Higher educational institutions to resume
Shafqat Mehmood also deliberated that teachers and administrative staff would be allowed to return to schools from January 11 after the winter break was over. Online learning can also be resumed from January 11, he said.
As for the board exams that had been scheduled to be held in March and April were postponed to May and June because “the children have not completed their coursework and we want to give them time [to prepare],” the Education Minister announced.
Moreover, schools will only reopen on January 18 when the government would review the health situation again on Jan 14 or 15 to “see if the trajectory is under control”. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan, who also addressed the press conference before reiterated that more precautions were needed to control the spread of Covid-19.
“When we looked at data and analysed it, it became clear that we need to take some more precautions and delay [reopening of schools] so that the second wave can be reduced before we reopen,” he stated.
The education ministry had announced the shutdown of schools earlier in November
