September: PCOS Awareness Month
One of the most ignored disorders/conditions is PCOS. In an attempt to raise awareness and educate women regarding this, September is PCOS Awareness Month.
PCOS, called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, is a genetic and hormonal disorder that is quite common amongst women who are close to reproductive age. It affects almost every 8% to 13% of women.
PCOS may directly impact your fertility, making it harder to bear children. Moreover, irregular or infrequent menstrual cycles, excess male hormones (androgen)- that may cause an increase in facial hair, and increased weight, diabetes, heart diseases are all signs of PCOS.
Basically, in PCOS, many small cysts or sacs grow in your ovaries, hence the word polycystic. These sacs are follicles, each containing an immature egg. The eggs never mature enough to start ovulation, due to these levels of estrogen, progesterone, FSH, and LH are affected. Estrogen and progesterone levels are lower than usual, while androgen levels are higher. The extra male hormones disrupt the menstrual cycle, so women with PCOS get fewer periods than usual.
There is no cause to PCOS doctors have been unable to link it to anything yet. However, here are a few common symptoms of the condition:
- Irregular periods
- Heavy bleeding
- Excess hair growth
- Male-pattern baldness
- Changing or darkening of skin color
- Headaches
- Weight gain: obesity
If you have noticed any of the symptoms above, it is probably time to visit your doctor. Since PCOS is majorly undiagnosed, almost 70% of women who have PCOS are unaware of the fact this makes awareness all the more necessary.
PCOS Awareness Month exists to raise awareness of and educate women regarding the condition. Its main aim is to attempt to improve the lives of those who are suffering from this condition and help them overcome their symptoms while also preventing life-threatening diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
We all need to take this condition seriously and raise as much awareness as we can. As several people are unaware of the fact that they are PCOS positive, it is imperative to educate them. Awareness about this will help them understand their symptoms and make them realize not to ignore them.
The PCOS Awareness Association is an NGO that aims to provide information about this disorder worldwide through its educational and support services and also providing help to those who are diagnosed with the condition. Throughout September, they have hosted multiple virtual events talking about issues or information related to PCOS.
