Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy wins the Eliasson Global Leadership Prize

Two-time Academy Award-winning movie maker, journalist and dissident Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy have once again made Pakistan proud by winning the prestigious 2018 Eliasson Global Leadership Prize.
Sharmeen is the first Pakistani to win the honor because of her unprecedented initiative and work that is courageous, idealistic, dynamic, established in all-inclusive qualities and in a general sense worldwide in reach, origination, and effect.

The prize was granted by the Tällberg Foundation in New York in acknowledgment of Sharmeen’s exceptional leadership.

The filmmaker, who is all around celebrated has been chosen from among 825 nominees from 130 nations and many diverse occupations, positions, and causes. This is an awesome accomplishment for her as well as Pakistan as a country. In choosing Sharmeen, the jury commended her undeniably persistent and viable leadership in changing personalities through her filmmaking as well as in attempting to change substances that ought to be unsatisfactory in the 21st century.

“I am honored to receive the Eliasson Global Leadership Prize at a time when holding up a mirror to society comes with a heavy price. With colleagues being jailed and killed around the world for simply speaking the truth, we need to have the courage to persevere. I remain committed to telling difficult stories in the hope that the conversations they spark will change the way we all see the world,” stated Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy on winning the Eliasson Global Leadership Prize.

Winners of the Eliasson Global Leadership Prize started in 2005 and given in its present frame since 2014, are named everywhere through an open, online process and are ultimately chosen by a jury of individuals themselves. The Eliasson prizes are upheld by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

Other than Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, the 2018 laureates include, Rafael Yuste and Imam Omar Kobine Layama.
