Sindh Lock Down: IGP Asks Police to Avoid Arrests

IGP Sindh asked the police to not arrest the violators of the lock down as habitual violators of the law, as these people are also victims of the situation.

In the first 2 days of the Sindh lock down, more than 700 people had been arrested. The trend continues, and on Wednesday (day 3), 407 people had been arrested in Sindh. According to the IGP, that is not the goal of the Sindh lock down.

The number of people violating the lock down in Karachi are reported at 259. Out of these arrests, 74 belonged to the South zone, 134 belonged to the East and 51 were from the West zone. Only 81 cases were registered in Karachi, however.

Furthermore, 70 persons were held for violating the lock down in the Hyderabad range, 10 in Mirpurkhas, nine in Shaheed Benazirabad, 43 in Sukkur and 16 in Larkana range. Only 40 of the cases were booked in the rest of the province.

Lock down by Consent, not Coercion

The IGP of Sindh, Mushtaq Ahmed Mahar, stated that they wanted to implement the lock down  with consent of the people, not by coercing them. The objective of the lock down is to ensure social distancing and helping people with the provision of essential food and sanitation commodities.

Moreover, Mahar also asked the police to not arrest the violators of the lock down as habitual violators of the law, as these people are also victims of the situation. He stated that it is time to find new ways of policing, and to engage the elderly of the community instead of using force on them.

Providing for the Underprivileged

IGP Sindh Mahar further requested the police officers to identify the poor and needy of their areas so that essential food and sanitation commodities can be provided to them, along with financial help during this lock down. It is very likely that the coming days and weeks may oversee a shortage of goods, leading to people resorting to crimes. In times such as these, the police should be serving the people as friends and helpers, so that the residents can trust them during their times of need.
